Our Approach

  • It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Solution Focused Therapy (SFT)

Traditional Counselling & Therapy has tended to be problem focused, looking back at where problems started and working through to the present day. While this approach can be very useful at times, SFT offers an alternative approach to therapy.

SFT is a goal orientated approach involving collaboration with you to explore what you want to achieve in terms of psychotherapeutic change, without exploring the history and origin of problems. Sessions typically focus on the here & now and on settings out plans for the future.
SFT is a therapeutic approach that builds on your strengths, is future focused, and can be offered as a brief intervention.

 Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave. It's most commonly used to treat anxiety and depression but can be useful for other mental and physical health problems.

CBT is based on the notion that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and feelings can trap you in a vicious cycle. With this approach problems that seem overwhelming can be managed by breaking down hurdles and dealing with them in a more positive way, with guidance from your therapist. Unlike some other talking treatments, CBT deals with your current problems, rather than focusing on issues from your past and looks for practical ways to improve your state of mind on a daily basis.

Integrative counselling

Integrative Counselling is based on the idea that there is no “one size fits all” approach that works for everyone, we are all individuals, and as such counselling techniques must be tailored to your needs and personal circumstances.

The evidence base is also related to different areas, no one theory alone has all the answers. Different theories, as long as they have a strong research and evidence base, are considered to have value and as such different approaches can be integrated to provide the best support possible for you through counselling. Essentially the therapy is tailored to you rather than you having to fit in with the therapy.

The overall aim with this approach is to promote healing and take a holistic approach, ensuring that the full potential of your mental, physical and emotional health can be reached. To get the most from this type of therapy you need to be open to self-exploration and identifying what factors in your life are causing problems and concerns.

 Other Therapeutic Influences

The approaches above are the main evidence-based practices we employ in our services, but our team has also had experience of a range of other approaches including Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Transactional Analysis, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based Counselling, Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), Rational Emotive Therapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Narrative Therapy. While these approaches are not offered directly, the do inform and influence our practices, and we will draw on these experiences in our work.

 Person-Centred Approach

With all of our work we take a person-centred approach. What this means is you are paced at the centre of the service and our focus is on you as a person and what you can do, not on your health condition. Support is focused on enabling you to achieve your aspirations and is tailored to your needs and unique circumstances. This includes taking into account your life experience, age, gender, culture, heritage, language, beliefs and identity.

Key underlying principles with this approach are treating you with dignity, compassion, and respect; demonstrating consistency in approach which includes work with us and also any other agency we recommend or refer you to, and we will co-ordinate with other services as required, in partnership with you; collaborative, personalised support, which draws on a clear evidence based but is tailored to fit your individual needs; supporting you with recognising and developing your strengths and abilities, so you can live an independent and fulfilling life.

Testimonials

  • "You treated me like an equal"

You spoke to me like a person, like an equal. You never spoke down to me.

You’ve not pushed. Only gently guiding me out of my comfort zone whilst offering encouragement, respecting my boundaries, and praising me when I do things that push me in the right direction.

You have been very understanding, slowly pushing me in the right direction, treating me with respect, compassion, dignity and making me feel more hopeful and positive about my future.

  • Just amazing...

I think you’ve really helped me, you’re fantastic at what you do. Without realising you helped me find the answers and you did not answer it for me.

  • "The therapy has motivated and inspired me"

Absolutely everything that we have explored has been helpful, you have been able to understand what I am struggling with or areas that I need to develop, so together we have been able to come up with really useful strategies. I don’t think anything has been unhelpful about the process and whilst I accept that things are still a working progress in terms of self-care and compassion, the therapy has motivated and inspired me, and I would not have been able to manage recent events in the way I have done if I hadn’t had these things in my consciousness.
